Green in Nature is One Thing

Green in Nature is One Thing is the image of a drawing, scanned, resized, printed and scanned again, until this image appeared. Like storytelling, historical or fictional – relayed information, translated and interpreted, is a whispering game, where the end-point differs greatly from the initial position.
The title refers to half a quote from Virginia Woolf´s Orlando, where Orlando struggles with writing verse with substance and truth. Looking at a laurel bush outside the window, (s)he cannot write another line: “Green in nature is one thing, green in literature another. Nature and letters seem to have a natural antipathy; bring them together and they tear each other to pieces.”
The image is part of my ongoing project Nature Studies. The idea of a “Nature Study” to me is interesting both as studies of materials and as a linguistic construct. The project is concerned with exploring the concept of the “natural”, and the languages that govern the way we acquire notions of substance and truth – and how already-explored and established convictions are shaped historically.
Billboard Festival Casablanca 2015 focusses on dialogue between Nordic and Arabic women artists. The intercultural dimension adds dynamic and exciting nuances to the billboard theme, since both Morocco and each Nordic country have their own visual and artistic traditions and approaches.
With this project we want to create a more open and innovative city for everyone, and temporarily transform and challenge ideas about urban space through artistic interventions.
